Winter is well and truly upon us and, as is the case each year, cardigans are unfashionable. However I want to speak on their behalf.
Let’s look first of all at jumpers, or pullovers as they are called in some places. Jumpers are either on or off. If you’re cold, you put on a jumper. If you’re too hot, you take your jumper off. If you’re just a little cold, do you put it on or leave it off?
A cardigan on the other hand can be worn in different configurations. If you’re cold, put on a cardigan. If you’re still cold, do up some buttons. If you’re still cold, do up more buttons. Too hot? Undo some buttons or wear it open.
The versatile cardigan wins hands down over the jumper.
Or, as I like to say: jumpers are binary, cardigans are analogue.
A well-orchestrated piece in defence of the cardigan, Greg! Sometimes when I’m sitting at my computer and a tad cold,as I am now, I will wear it as a shawl around my shoulders – not possible with a jumper. And jumpers mess your hair when you take them on and off. I could also wax lyrical on the benefits of the cardigan!

Yes, there’s the hair problem, the static electricity problem and the reading glasses that disappear somewhere inside the jumper and you can’t find them because your glasses have gone missing.
