It’s called the United States, but the name glosses over staggering disunity in so many ways. Here’s just one example: in more than 50% of the states it was legal to sack employee just because they were gay, bisexual or transgender.
That is until Monday 15 June 2020, when the US Supreme Court found this was illegal. In a majority decision, the Supreme Court found that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does indeed prohibit discrimination based on any aspect of sexual identity.
This was a totally unexpected result for LGBT+ rights in the US, as Trump has replaced two retiring Supreme Court judges with conservative judges during his term in office, and they are now in the majority.
The decision was six to three! One of Trump’s appointments, Justice Gorsuch, was amongst the six.
Trump will not be happy with this result.
