Treasure Trove

In an earlier post about James Tyson I mentioned finding online information in the archives of a newspaper called The Queenslander. After digging a little deeper I found a most amazing resource funded by our Federal Government through the National Library of Australia.

It’s called Trove. A note on the home page says it all:

Find and get over 349,723,587 Australian and online resources: books, images, historic newspapers, maps, music, archives and more

Not only can you find scanned pages from newspapers like the The Herald and the Brisbane Courier, but they have been digitised and are searchable!

From 1803 to 1954!

You can view any edition of any paper, page by page. The articles have been put though optical character recognition, so there is a digital version of each article. The quality is better than you would expect from such poor quality source, and you can contribute by adding corrections to the digital version.
